Make Your Own Harry Potter Butterbeer

Feast of Fiction, a relatively new YouTube channel, looks to take on the task of making our favorite fictional foods a reality.

This week's video features at home recipes for making your very own versions of Butterbeer, which is seen in the Harry Potter franchise.  Now you can have the buttery beverage anytime you like instead of having to book a trip down to Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.

Check out their previous video, demonstrating how to make a Sunlight Souffle from Skyrim and also make sure to subscribe to learn how to make other fictitious concoctions.

New Image from Disney's Frankenweenie

I'm a pretty big Tim Burton fan, so I'm pretty excited that Disney has just released a brand new image from the upcoming Burton film Frankenweenie.  If the name sounds familiar, it's because the stop-motion animated film is a direct adaptation of Burton's live-action short made in the 80's with the same name.

IMDb describes the synopsis as follows:
When young Victor's pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor's home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbors, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky's still the good loyal friend he's always been.
Set to be released October 5th, 2012, Frankenweenie features the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, and Conchata Ferrell.  Click on the image below for a closer look.

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Gets Sweded

If you saw 2008's Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Mos Def, you're probably familiar with the term "sweded".  If not, IMDB has a little bit of trivia for you:
The term "Sweded" was created due to the Swedish government's stance on file-sharing. While many media corporations have succeeded in having files of their copyrighted works removed from Internet web sites, Sweden has treated such file sharing as a form of free speech, and a right of consumers. There is even a Swedish pro-piracy political party.
Anyway, since the movie, giving trailers and movies the "sweded" treatment has become pretty popular.  Run a search on YouTube for the term and you can see anything from Terminator 2 to The Neverending Story.  Well it looks like fans turned there attention the The Dark Knight Rises trailer, which was released earlier this week.

It's a pretty darn good shot-for-shot recreation, with a little jab at Bane's voice.  Check out the trailer above and let me know what you think.

New Promo Art for The Amazing Spider-Man, Reminds Me of Something...

I realized I've been neglecting a lot of the Spider-Man news that have some out in the last couple weeks.  To remedy that, I thought I'd point out some promo art that's been released by Sony for next year's The Amazing Spider-Man.

While the images look pretty cool, showcasing Spidey in some classic poses, the photo on bottom left is way to reminiscent of 2002's Spider-Man poster.

Now, I understand that these poses are pretty standard for Spider-Man, but you would think that if the studio was trying to separate this franchise from the Sam Rami/Toby McGuire films, they would try to make these shots stand on their own two feet.

Check out larger versions of the photos by clicking on the thumbnails below and let me know what you think in the comments section.  Do you think Sony should've tried something a little more creative?

Robin Easter Egg in The Dark Knight Rises Trailer

While you can probably put money on the fact that we won't see Robin in The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan did sneak a little easter egg into the trailer that was released earlier this week.

If you watch closely within the first few seconds of the trailer, you'll notice that the 'R' in R.O.G.U.E.S. has a strong resemblance to the current Robin insignia.

Oh Nolan, what a cheeky devil you are.

This will be stuck in your head all day.  You're welcome.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Poster and Trailer Unveiled

So I know I'm a little late to the party on this one, but last night saw the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey trailer and teaser poster.

The film, which is set to hit theaters next December, follows the character of Bilbo Baggins who joins a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.  Recruited by Gandolf the Grey, Bilbo joins the company of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakensheild on a journey that will take them through dangerous lands filled with goblins, Orcs, Wargs, giant spiders, shapeshifters, sorcerers and even the creature known as Gollum.

Click the thumbnail to the left for a larger view of the poster and check out the first trailer embed below.

"An Unexpected Journey" is set to be released December 14, 2012 and will be followed up by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013.

How Battlestar Galactica Can Ruin Your Life

This promo for Portlandia shows just how dangerously addictive sci-fi can really be.

I have a hand full of friends that swear by Battlestar Galactica, but I have yet to go back and watch the series.  While I'm trying to expose myself to as much as I can, after seeing this video I'm a little nervous to jump in, as I went through an eerily similar situation (although not as extreme) when I threw myself into the world of Doctor Who.

If interested, Amazon has Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on sale for $128.99, but is currently on backorder until after Christmas.

New The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Officially Online!

After receiving a link to a bootlegged version of the new The Dark Knight Rises trailer that played in front of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows this weekend, I hoped that Warner Bros. would release an official version relatively soon.

Well, turns out I should start hoping for a million bucks, because about 15 minutes ago, the WB officially released the trailer.

What Could Have Been: Green Goblin FX Test from Spider-Man

While 2002's Spider-Man is considered one of the best comic book adaptations to-date, many agree that there was much disappointment behind the overall look of the Green Goblin in the movie.  Rather than getting something that more closely resembled the Goblin from the comics, we got something akin to the 1995 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

The above video, which was released yesterday by FX company Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., shows early FX test footage of what the Green Goblin should could have looked like in Sam Rami's comic book flick

What do you think?  Would you have rather have seen this version of the Green Goblin?  Let me know what you think in the comic below.

New The Dark Knight Rises Teaser Poster

If you haven't been able to tell yet, I'm quite the Batman fan and super excited for next year's The Dark Knight Rises.

Building off of the latest bit of marketing, Warner Bros. has released a new teaser poster for the movie.  To say that this is a teaser is an understatement, as the poster suggests "the breaking of the Bat" storyline from the comics in where Bane breaks Batman's back.

You can check out a larger version of the poster by clicking on the thumbnail to the right.

'Operation Early Bird' Revealed - See The Dark Knight Rises Prologue Three Days Early

Yesterday I wrote about the start of The Dark Knight Rises viral marketing campaign, which lead to the discovery of OperationEarlyBird.com.  The countdown is now over, and instead you are greeted with the above map, which allows you to enter in coordinates.

It took me a bit of time to figure out what was going on, but a poster on one of the Dark Knight forums over at SuperheroHype.com mentioned checking out TheDarkKnightRises.com at the same time.

The site has been streaming audio of two women rattling off a series of numbers, which happen to be coordinates you can enter and submit.  If entered correctly, a new green dot appears which seem to be locations of IMAX theaters across the globe.  You can click on one of these dots, which should give you a pop up of the name of the theater and the date and time of December 13th, at 10PM, with a button where you can purchase tickets.

Posters on the above mentioned forum, reveal that the tickets are for The Dark Knight Rises prologue.  Looking back at the title of "Operation Early Bird", it all makes sense now.  Those patient enough to continue to enter coordinates and hope a location near you appears, can get a chance to get a early viewing of the prologue before it hits theaters in front of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol on December 16th.

While not the most exciting start to the viral campaign, it does give fans a chance to cool way to see the prologue a few days early.  I for one, will most likely wait until it hits the net in the next couple weeks.

The Dark Knight Rises Viral Update

Following up on my earlier post on the start of The Dark Knight Rises viral marketing campaign, Comingsoon.net has pointed out a new "CIA" memo, calling out an "Operation Early Bird".

Posted by the viral Twitter feed @thefirerises earlier this afternoon, the document mentions that Operation Early Bird is set to begin at 10AM PST, tomorrow morning.  If you head on over to OperationEarlyBird.com, you'll find a timer counting down the the event's time.

I have no idea what this will lead to, but I'm really looking forward to whatever the next clue might be.

Force the New Twitter Web-Design

Twitter just announced a new web-design made to streamline and simplify the overall Twitter-experience, making it "easier to connect with the things you care about".  Twitter also released updated versions of their mobile applications that mirror the experience.  They've said the updated will be rolling out over the next several weeks, but you can force the change almost immediately, starting today.

Simply log out of Twitter's desktop interface and download/update your iPhone or Android Twitter app.  Then just log back into the Twitter on your desktop.  You should start to see the new interface after a few refreshes, if not right away.

The Dark Knight Rises Viral Marketing Begins

Beginning in May of 2007, 42 Entertainment launched an extensive viral marketing campaign leading up to the release of The Dark Knight.  The campaign garnered over 10 million particpants in over 75 countries and involved hundreds of web pages, interactive games, mobile phones, print material, emails, real world scavenger hunts, videos and unique prizes.

It now appears that The Dark Knight Rises will follow suite.  Yesterday Wired posted what seems to be the start of the viral campaign.  A "CIA Bulletin" featuring information on a Dr. Leonid Pavel has been released, revealing that he is missing.  How it might be involved with the plot is still under speculation, but many fans think it may lead into the prologue that will shown with Warner Bros' Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol on December 16th.

Empire has also posted another document, showing a transcribed conversation on the whereabouts of Dr. Pavel.

I took a small part in TDK's viral campaign, so I can't wait to see how this all ends up playing out and fitting into the film.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to premiere July 20, 2012 and  stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata and Nestor Carbonell.

Ghostbusters! : A Johnson Family Film

This probably one of the funniest "home movies" I've seen in a really long time.  Watch as a brother and sister duo try to save up money for a bouncy castle.

Ugh...The Three Stooges Trailer Debuts

If you couldn't tell by the headline, I'm not a real huge supporter of this film.  Too me, The Three Stooges were an ensemble group and not necessarily "characters" that could be recast.  Yea yea, I know, Curly replaced Shemp, who then replaced Curly, and was then replaced by Joe Besser and "Curly" Joe DeRita, but at least they were their own characterizations.  They were stand alone performers that added something new to the Stooges.  It wasn't like they were brought in to be the "new Darrin" or anything.

It's like getting four guys together and saying, "this is Paul, John, George and Ringo...they're the new Beetles."

But I digress...

The first trailer for the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges film has arrived on iTunes Movie Trailers.  The film is said to be inspired by original Stooge shorts, breaking the story into three separate vignettes, following the boys from newborns left at an orphanage into adulthood.  The movie stars Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso as Larry, Moe and Curly respectively, with a Jane Lynch, Larry David, Stephen Collins, Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Hudson in supporting roles.

The trailer looks to keep the slap-stick spirit of original Stooge shorts, which is nice, but to me there will only be one Moe, Larry and Curly.

What do you think of the trailer?  Do you think this is something that should have been made?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

UPDATE: Michael Bay Close to Signing on Transformers 4

After somewhat of a denial this past October, it looks like Michael Bay may be planning another soiree between the Autobots and the Decepticons.  Vulture is reporting that he is close to finalizing a deal with Paramount and will most likely begin prepping after his long-awaited project, Pain and Gain.

While nothing is yet a done deal, insiders expect a formal announcement as early as next week.  It is not currently known whether or not lead actor, Shia LaBeouf will be involved.

I for one have loved all three of Bay's Transformers movies and look forward to seeing how he continues the story...especially since he killed off most of the Decepticons in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

UPDATE: Michael Bay has taken to his official site to comment on yesterday's news:
"Right now I'm not decided on Transformers 4
Studio's are passing rumors but I'm not sure what I'm doing? I know I'm going to do Pain and Gain early spring but that's it for right now. I'm leaving all my options on the table. I've got several Studio meetings in the next two weeks."

Looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

Doctor Who Christmas Special Prequel

I'm a HUGE Doctor Who fan, largely due to one of the major inspirations to the blog, founder of Nerdist.com and comedian, Chris Hardwick.

While I'm super bummed that I have to wait until next fall for Series 7, us Whovians do have this year's Christmas special to look forward to.  To whet our appetites, the BBC has released the prequel/teaser to the special, entitled The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe.

If you're not into Doctor Who, I suggest you at least give it a try.  I became instantly hooked.

The Christmas special airs December 25th at 9pm/8pm central on BBC America.

Chewbacca on Glee??

I'll be honest, I've never watched an episode of Glee, but I figured there's gotta be a few people that fall within the venn diagram of Star Wars fanatics and Gleeks.

Airing next week, Glee will feature Chewy in a special "episode-within-an-episode" episode that will pay homage to the 1978 train-wreck known as the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Star, Matthew Morrison, confirmed the news on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel:
"We called up George Lucas and he gave us Chewbacca. There is only one guy who can officially be Chewbaccca, and he lives in Northern California and they flew him in," Morrison said. "We had Chewbacca for the day, and it was just great, and we were all taking pictures with him. This is a guy who has been doing it for 12 years."
I'm assuming the "guy" he's talking about is none other than Peter Mayhew, who has played the character since 1977.

If you're a fan of both Glee and Star Wars, be sure to catch the show next Tuesday 8/7 CT on FOX.

UPDATE: Verizon Says No to Google Wallet on Galaxy Nexus

Various outlets are reporting today that the Verizon version of the upcoming, and severely delayed, Galaxy Nexus will not be supporting Google Wallet.

Computer World received confirmation from a Google rep that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus will not be able to utilize Google's mobile payment system. No hard details were given on the subject, just that it was Verizon’s choice.  Speculation has started that the main reason for the exclusion of the app is due to Verizon's own upcoming mobile payment system powered by ISIS.

Most Android fanatics are getting slightly peeved with Verizon for lack of details around the super phone's launch, the inclusion of Verizon bloatware on a "pure Google" experience device, and now this.  Luckily, Android 4.0 allows you to "disable" (not uninstall) pre-installed apps, but the idea of carriers screwing with a Nexus device defeats the purpose in the eyes of most Android-purists.

However, knowing the Android community, it will be no time at all before a hacked version of Google Wallet makes its way onto the device.

Do you think carriers have way too much power over how we use our devices?  Do you think it's right that they block certain apps in favor of their own?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Stay nerdy my friends.

UPDATE:  Verizon has released a statement regarding blocking Google Wallet:
"Statement from Jeffrey Nelson, spokesperson for Verizon:
Recent reports that Verizon is blocking Google Wallet on our devices are false. Verizon does not block applications.
Google Wallet is different from other widely-available m-commerce services. Google Wallet does not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications. Instead, in order to work as architected by Google, Google Wallet needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones.
We are continuing our commercial discussions with Google on this issue.”

NASA's Kepler Finds First Planet in Habitable Zone

Artist's rending of Kepler-22b
NASA's Kepler mission has just found its first planet to fall within the "habitable zone"; the region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface.

The newly found planet, dubbed Kepler-22b, is located 600 light years away, orbiting a sun like star that is similar to our own.  Roughly two and half times the size of Earth, scientists have yet to find out if Kepler-22b has a primarily rocky, gassy or liquidy composition.  However, they say that the discovery is a step in the right direction on finding a planet similar to Earth.
"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."
Out of the 54 possible habitable zone planets reported in February 2011, Kepler-22b is the first to be confirmed - a milestone that will be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

To find out more about Kepler-22b, check out NASA's press release in the source.

Mammoth Resurrection?

So Yahoo! News is reporting that scientists in Russia and Japan are tag-teaming on an effort that hopes to resurrect the woolly mammoth within the next five years.  A thigh bone of one of the hairy beasts was found under the permafrost in Siberia, keeping the marrow inside well preserved.

Scientists from The Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Japan's Kinki University hope to defy nature and clone the animal using DNA taken from the marrow and introduced it to the the nucleus of a common elephant egg.  The next step would then be to implant the embryo into the womb of an elephant in order to be delivered.  It sounds like something right out of a Michael Crichton novel, but scientists don't foresee many complications since the two species are closely related.  If successful, we may see the first live mammoth in more than 10,000 years walking the Earth by 2016.

Why stop there?  If we can bring the animal back, why not genetically alter it to become miniaturized?  We could have mammoth rides at kids birthday parties.  Or we could even domesticate them.  Wouldn't you want to have a pet mini-mammoth?  How cool would that be?

Michael Shannon Talks 'Man of Steel'

The Province sat down to chat with Michael Shannon (Broadwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road) and asked him a few questions about his role as General Zod in the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel.

When asked about performing on green screen, Shannon had this to say:
"I guess it can be frustrating not having those tactile elements around you, being surrounded by the green, but you're always trying to tell a story and be honest and you use your imagination regardless of whether there's a set or not. In a way it's even more childlike (with CG) because you're really relying solely on your imagination, like a little kid in the yard who doesn't have any props, just inventing something out of thin air. That's the original impulse for it all to begin with, I think."

The interview also talks a bit about his background, his role on Boardwalk Empire, and future projects. You can check out the rest of the interview at the source below.

Still shooting, Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013.  The film also stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix and Laurence Fishburne.

Remake Alert: Starship Troopers

Get ready for Federal Service citizens.  The bugs are coming back.

Vulture is reporting that Sony producer Neal Moritz has decided that Rico's Roughnecks are ready to saddle back up and kill a whole lotta bugs.  Script duties have been assigned to screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz, who most recently wrote Thor and X-Men: First Class, as well as episodes of TV shows Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Fringe.

The 1997 original starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris and told the story of a war between Earth and a race of giant killer bugs.

I actually don't mind this remake/reboot as much as some of the other crap that Hollywood has been belching up lately.  I file the original cult classic under the "so-bad-its-good" category, so I'll look forward to this one.  Just hope that NPH makes an appearance.

What Can I Say...Me So Nerdy.

I like Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, Batman, Ninja Turtles, vintage Disney, Transformers, Superman, comics in general, Star Wars, cartoons and the 80's.  In essence, I'm a nerd.

For the longest time, I've tried to suppress my nerdy side because social norms growing up told me that liking the stuff I liked was "uncool".  But in the last decade or so, something unexpected happened.  Somehow what was once considered "nerdy", became "cool".

Now that I'm in my late 20's, I've decided that I don't really care how other people view me and have let my nerd flag fly...and with unfettered gusto.  Picture over 25 years of suppressed nerdom coming out all at once.  So, since I don't have a whole lot of outlets to express my inner nerd, I've decided to start a blog.

Now, it won't be a "blog" in the traditional sense, where I write long-winded or thought provoking posts about being a complete dork.  Instead, I intend on treating this site as a micro-blog/Tumblr.  Here you'll find all the things I find interesting that may be considered "nerdy".  That could include reblogged articles, nerdish thoughts, or random acts of nerdiness that I find just out and about.

Well, I'm not sure what else to say, so in true nerd fashion, I'm going to end this awkwardly.  Hope you enjoy what's the come and I welcome all feedback.

Stay nerdy my friends.
