Ript Apparel's t-shirt design for today features an adorable Peanuts/Sherlock mash-up.  The design was created by user brenda.snell.10 and you can see more of her terrific work by visiting her RedBubble portfolio here.

Sherlock has easily become one of my favorite shows and I'm anxiously waiting for Series 3.  If you haven't seen the BBC series, I highly recommend checking it out.

Apple Granted Mobile Software Patent That Could Seriously Hinder Device Market

If you've been following the ongoing patent war between Apple and pretty much every OEM out there, well I've only got news for you:  things are going to get even uglier.

Apple was recently awarded ownership of US patent #8223134, which covers "Portable electronic device, method, and graphical user interface for displaying electronic lists and documents" and about 30 other separate claims.  The extremely broad terminology encompasses most UI features on a majority of today's smartphones, including "the displaying of documents on a screen, UI modules for a telephone, video player, camera, and browser, and even scrolling and a multitouch interface feature".  This is pretty much bad new for any company currently producing smartphones, that isn't Apple.

Now I am admittedly an Android fan, favoring Google's OS over Apple's iOS, so I am a little biased when it comes to stuff like this.  But, it seems that Apple isn't doing much innovating these days and instead, is attacking anyone that threatens their crowned jewels - the iPhone and iPad.  The fact that they keep being granted these very broad software patents, is somewhat of a joke, and is just allowing them to stifle   any direct competition.  In Apple's eyes, companies like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Google have "stolen" from them...which is pretty laughable when you think about it given Steve Jobs own comments on "stealing".  While they see it as protecting their intellectual property, many would argue that all Apple really did was copy existing ideas and just make them "prettier".

While I do favor Google's offering, I will give Apple credit where credit is due.  They did single handedly change the face of the cell phone market with the introduction of the first generation iPhone.  I also have a MacBook Pro, which I love dearly.  However, stories like these really make me hate them to a degree that may seem unhealthy.

Ultimately, this is a big fat loss for us consumers, as OEMs may need to start "dumbing" down their own smartphone offerings in order to avoid getting hit with an oncoming storm of lawsuits, thus limiting your choice of smartphone.  While no lawsuits regarding this patent have been filed yet, you know Apple is just waiting to unleash their fury.

What do you think of this "victory" for Apple?  Are you for them "protecting their intellectual property"?  Or are you like me and think the US patent system is ridiculous for granting them this patent?

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

The Six Super Villians of Nerdery

You know you've either met or ran across people that fall within these six archetypes.  My personal favorite: The Alpha Nerd - you know...the guy that can't wait to berate you for thinking Wolverine's real name is Logan.

Check out the other five after the break.  Let me know in the comments below which type you run into most often.

Bruce Wayne's Golf Cart...Not Very Subtle

I don't consider what I play "golf", but I do enjoy hitting the links.  I would be out there all the time if I had a cart like this.

My Favorite Cosplay to Date: Futurama's Scruffy

Right now is probably one of my favorite times of the year.  Not because of summer, but because of the San Diego Comic Con.  While I've never been to the Con (yet), I love to see the hundreds of pictures that stream through from various websites...whether it be individual merch booths, the celebrities or my personal favorite, the cosplayers.

The above pic is probably one of my favorite cosplay costumes that I've seen so far: Planet Express' janitor, Scruffy, from Futurama.

The photo was taken by Hayley Sargent for the folks over at Geeks are Sexy.  You can check out some other great cosplayers by checking out their 2012 Comic Con gallery here.

Enjoy :)

Philip Seymour Hoffman Officially Cast in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Lionsgate officially came out today and announced the casting of Oscar winner, Philip Seymour Hoffman, as Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Those that are unfamiliar with the book series, Plutarch Heavensbee is named Head Gamemaker for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, eventually becoming an uneasy ally to the story's heroin, Katniss Everdeen.  Hoffman joins returning cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland - all of which reprise their respective roles.

Hoffman becomes the first official addition to Catching Fire.  Rumors continue to circulate on who is up for the role of Finnick Odair, while the role of Johanna Mason has been reportedly offered to actress Jena Malone.

In addition to the casting announcement, Lionsgate has also released the first official synopsis of the film:
'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) — a competition that could change Panem forever.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is expected to begin filming later this year and is scheduled to hit theaters November 22nd, 2013.

I find the casting news a little off-putting.  While Hoffman is a phenomenal actor, he is not at all who I imagined while reading the books...same goes for Jena Malone as Johanna.  I guess I will reserve judgement until the film's release, or at the very least, a trailer.

What do you think of the casting news?  Are you excited for PSH joining the cast?  Who would you have liked to have seen as Plutarch?  Let me know in the comments below.

Say Hello to Apple's Clothing Line from 1986

Yup, you read right.  Apparently Apple tried it's hand at creating a clothing line back in the mid-80s.  Fortunately for the rest of humanity, Apple's knack for design lies with gadgetry and not fashion.

"The Apple Collection", which is what it was called, was a sports-casual clothing line focused on polos, sweatshirts, belts and old school "snapback" baseball hats - all of which were adorned with the original multicolored Apple logo.

I have no clue if how popular this line was, but you can probably put money on the fact that if Apple made a foray into fashion again (iApparel?), Apple fanboys would be all over it.

Be sure to check out more from the collection after the break.

What do you think of the line?  Would you wear Apple branded clothing if the company produced it today??  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Ron Perlman Becomes Hellboy Once More for Make-A-Wish Child

Special effects company Spectral Motion, which has worked on the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Hellboy films, recently worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation on making two young boys' dreams come true.  For one of the boys, Zachary, his dream was to both meet and become Hellboy in real life.  Well once Ron Perlman, who portrayed Hellboy in both films, got word of the little man's dream, he just had to help make it a reality.
In the past three weeks, Spectral Motion has been honored to host two wonderful Make-A-Wish children, Caleb and Zachary. Zachary loved his visit for two very special reasons. It was Zachary's wish to meet Hellboy and also to become Hellboy. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted Spectral Motion with this request, Mike thought it would be fantastic to have Ron Perlman reprise his role for the day. Ron loved the idea and donned the makeup once more (with the assistance of Lufeng Qu and Eden Elizalde) and also ordered a Hellboy sized meal of burgers, shakes, and fries for Zachary and his family and the entire Spectral crew to enjoy. Later in the day, Zachary was transformed into Hellboy with the assistance of makeup artists Lufeng Qu and Neil Winn. Both of the Make-A-Wish days were a complete thrill for the families of the children, as well as for the crew at Spectral Motion!
You can check out a few photos from the day below after the break and check out a few more over at Spectral Motion's Facebook page here.

NERD ART: Badass Red Ranger

While I haven't posted any of his artwork on the blog before, artist Dave Rapoza has easily become one of my favorites.

Above is a pretty badass depiction of the Red Ranger from the original Mighty  Morphin Power Rangers.  The print will be available for purchase at this year's San Diego Comic Con:
Please support Acme Archives Direct at the SDCC if you're going, they're making it possible for me to legally continue to produce and sell prints due to their massive license catalog! So big thanks to em for helping me out!
You can check out more of Dave's awesome artwork by checking out his blog or his deviantART profile.

Angry Customer Literally Tears Apart T-Mobile Store

I'm sure we've all been really angry with our cell carrier's at one point or another, but to the degree of actually walking into a store and tearing up the place?  Apparently this UK T-Mobile customer felt he had reason enough to...

Whatever the reason, this man felt the need to run rapid on a local Manchester T-Mobile store, tearing displays from the walls and spraying everything down with fire extinguishers while employees watched and quickly called the police.

Maybe he's made that he doesn't have Ice Cream Sandwich on his Android phone yet??

Have you ever been mad enough to do something like this?  Let me know in the comments below.
