Lego to Make Back to the Future Sets in 2013

The Venn diagram of Back to the Future and Lego will finally exist!

News broke today that BTTF will become one of newest linceases that Lego has picked up and will produce new sets in 2013.  This is all thanks to a fan created project was submitted to the Lego Cuusoo site back in August of 2011.  The project finally passed review thanks to the 10,000 votes required just to have it considered.  The final set is still under development with help from Universal, but you can bet we'll see the DeLorean along with Marty and Doc...and possibly the versions from BTTF 2 and BTTF 3.

The best part of the story?  The project's creators are going to donate the one percent royalty fee they'll receive from their project being produced to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research.  How awesome are those guys?!

Will you be picking up the Lego sets next year?  Let me know in the comments below.

Stay nerdy my friends...

Doctor Who's New TARDIS

Not only will our beloved Doctor be getting an new companion in the upcoming Christmas special, The Snowmen, but apparently he'll be getting a new TARDIS as well...at least a new control room.

This newly released image from the +Doctor Who Google+ page give us the first really good look at the new TARDIS interior.  For any classic Who fan, you'll immediately notice the retro look of the center console.  However, the more I look at the pic, I can see elements carried over from the 9th, 10th and 11th Doctor's TARDISES as well...or is it TARDI?

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this new TARDIS fits into the story.  I, like most fans, have been without the Doctor for far too long now, so Christmas day, for more than one reason, can't get here quick enough.

What do you think of the new TARDIS?  Love it?  Hate it?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Sam Flynn Lives! - Garret Hedlund Confirmed for Next TRON

Good news programs!  After news broke last week that Walt Disney had hired scribe Jesse Wigutow to rewrite the next TRON film, NextMovie is confirming that TRON: Legacy star, Garret Hedlund will be returning to the grid as Sam Flynn.

While little has been revealed about the project, including a plot or a title, the next TRON film is rumored to explore "life and death in the digital realm".  Hearing that, might we expect to see the return of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges)?

While it's only speculation on my part right now, I would put money on it based on the short that was included with the Blu-Ray of TRON: Legacy (*cough*FLYNN LIVES*cough*).

What do you think of the news?  Are you excited for another trip to the grid?  Are you interested in seeing where the story goes?  As always, let me know what you think in the comments below.

New Teaser Trailer for Man of Steel

Not wanting to be too movie trailer focused today, but this is a film I'm extremely excited for.

Warner Brothers Pictures has just released the newest teaser trailer to Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman flick, Man of Steel.  The trailer was originally supposed to first appear attached to The Hobbit, which hits theaters this Friday, but you won't hear any complaints from me.

The trailer, while not giving a great look at the story, definitely gives a glimpse of the film's scale and emotional back story of Clark's journey to accept his powers...very similar to early seasons of Smallville, which I happened to love.

You can check out the latest teaser embedded after the jump.  And be sure to let me know what you think of the look Snyder's going for in the comments below.

Man of Steel will hit theaters everywhere on June 14th, 2013.

New Trailer for Disney's The Lone Ranger

What do you think of the second trailer?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Lack of Updates

Hi all.  I just wanted to get a quick post up addressing the lack of updates you've undoubtedly noticed over the last month or so.

If you keep up with multiple blogs like me, you know there hasn't been a shortage of stuff going on in the "nerd-o-sphere" that could've and should have been posted on the blog.  Unfortunately for you, the readers, I've taken on more and more responsibility at work and just haven't had the time to dedicate myself to researching/writing many of the top stories and general nerdiness that have been popping up lately.

If you've been an active reader so far, I just want to apologize and thank you for your support.  In the meantime, I am going to make much more of an effort on making regular posts again, so please bare with me.  They may not be at the frequency that they once were, but most definitely won't be the "one post everything three months", that most personal blogs end up being.

Again, thank you for sticking with me and be on the look out for new posts.  If you have any suggestions or stories you want to see on the site, feel free to shoot me an email or a tweet...contact info is located on the "contact" section above.

Thanks for your patience and as always, stay nerdy my friends.

Could a Zombie Apocalypse Really Happen??

According to the science laid out in the above video, yes a zombie apocalypse is totally plausible...given the right kind of virus that is.  However, it will more than likely involve the "rage" style zombies seen in 28 Days Later...meaning, we're totally screwed.

Walt Disney Company Buys LucasFilm; Plans New Star Wars Films

In a shocking turn of events earlier today, The Walt Disney Company has purchased LucasFilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion in cash and stocks.  The deal transfers the rights from sole owner, George Lucas, to Disney and includes the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.

Disney also announced plans to release another new Star Wars trilogy in 2015, starting with Star Wars: Episode VII, and will look to release a new film every other year and then "go from there".

While a pretty big shocker to be sure, I'm actually not all that surprised (I know I know) given Disney's close ties to the Star Wars franchise, given it's presence at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida and Disney's Disneyland Park in California.

You can watch a video of the announcement below after the break, as well as read today's press release.

What do you think this surprising news?  Are you excited about a new trilogy or dreading another Jar Jar Binks fiasco?

Sound off in the comments below.

Teaser Trailer for Iron Man 3

HOLY CRAP!  That's all I have to say after watching the first teaser trailer for Marvel's upcoming super hero flick, Iron Man 3.
"In Marvel's "Iron Man 3", brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr., is pitted against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"
Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley.

Expect to see a lot more Iron Man leading up to it's US release on May 3, 2013.  You can check out the latest teaser, embedded after the break.  Be sure to let me know what you think of the film in the comments below.

I don't have many details around who modified this ZXR9 Streetfighter, but it appears on the Spanish site, Tuneos.com.  You could totally see something similar to this eventually made into a toy at some point.

Oh, and expect to see the first trailer for Iron Man 3 sometime this month.

LEGO® The Lord of the Rings Video Game Trailer

I usually get bored with LEGO based games, but this one might actually be pretty epic.  You can check out the trailer above and let me know what you think in the comments below.

First Trailer for Disney's The Lone Ranger

Disney has just released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming blockbuster, The Lone Ranger.  The film stars Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, aka The Lone Ranger.
From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' The Lone Ranger, a thrilling adventure infused with action and humour, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes.
Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, a legend of justice -- taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.
The film also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.

It's hard to get a feel if the movie will be good or not, but the scale of it look epic, on par with the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks.  Take a look at the trailer below and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Look for the The Lone Ranger to ride into theaters July 3, 2013.

Stay nerdy my friends.

New Trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Today brings the release of a brand new trailer for the upcoming prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit theaters December 14th.  In the meantime, you can check out the new trailer embedded below.

Send a Hogwarts Acceptance Letter to Your Little Witch or Wizard

Say you're planning a surprise trip to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and want to make the trip that much more exciting...or you just happen to have a really big Potter fan in your family and want to do something special.  Well, Legendary Letters is something you'll want to check out.

Specializing in personalized letters from the likes of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy since 1997, "Elf Stacey" has expanded to include some really cool items from Willy Wonka, Twilight, The Hunger Games and of course Harry Potter.  Ranging from prop replicas such as train tickets to the Hogwarts Express to the Sorcerer's Stone (or Philosopher's Stone for you UK fans ;) ), the coolest thing available is undoubtedly the personalized acceptance letters you can send a loved one from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Starting at just $12, each Hogwarts letter features an authentic signature from Professor McGonagall, handwritten in green ink, and is sent in an ivory A7 envelope that is sealed with a faux wax Hogwart's seal.  The letter is also accompanied with a list of all the books and equipment your little witch or wizard will need.  You can choose from a number of different personalization options and can even tailor it based on the age of the recipient.
Harry received his letter on his 11th birthday, and most people order these for 11th birthdays. However, sometimes that just isn't possible. If you have a student age 12-18 who did not receive one at 11, you may choose to add a post script that apologizes for the lateness of the letter. If your student is over 18, you may choose to have the letter sent from the Dead Letter Office. Essentially, this will have stamps and markings on the envelope showing it has been lost since the person was 11. Some may also choose to have a letter sent to a child younger than 11. We can send a pre-approval in that case.
It's also suggested that if you send to someone that is over the age of 18, to be sure to address it to where they lived when they were eleven and use maiden names for anyone that may be married in order to add to the "realism" of the letter.

And for the practical joke that will most definitely make your little one cry, you can always send them a Hogwarts rejection letter, sent directly from Dumbledore himself.

Be sure to check out Legendary Letter's Harry Potter store to see all the amazing replicas and personalized gifts that are available, as well as their other offerings from the properties like Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribbean by heading over to their site here.

Big thanks to Brandon for sending this my way.

Stay nerdy my friends :)

Apple Finally Releases the iPhone 5

So yesterday, Apple finally unveiled their latest flagship device - the iPhone 5.  While most Apple fans are probably thrilled, awestruck, totally amazed, salivating, etc., I found yesterday's announcement to be rather "meh".

While I am admittedly an Android fanboy, I do respect Apple for catapulting the modern smartphone industry and I have owned an iPhone 4 at one point, but choose that iOS wasn't for me.  However, I'm sure most level headed iPhone fans can agree with me in the sediment that the iPhone 5, while very stylish, is pretty much only a slight improvement over last year's "meh", the iPhone 4S.

On the surface, the iPhone 5 biggest changes are a slightly larger and better screen, new charging port, thinner profile and a lighter, slightly more streamlined construction.  Other than that, there are a few notable improvements under the hood: slightly upgraded front-facing camera, Apple's new A6 processor (whatever that is), slightly better battery life and LTE capabilities.  The iPhone 5 will also enable users to use FaceTime over wireless or cellular networks and will also sport Apple's latest iOS 6 operating system, which includes some slight improvements to Siri.

Now, I'm sure you've probably noticed my use of "slightly" a number of time in my description of the phone.  Yes, part of it is my bias coming through, but if you compare the iPhone 5 against the iPhone 4S spec-wise, it becomes a lot more apparent.  You can check out a side by side comparison that Engadget put together after the jump and see for yourself.

I'm sure the iPhone 5 will be another huge success, but I'm starting to feel that Apple is starting to just ride the wave they created with the original iPhone back in 2007.  The last two iterations of their flagship phone have been rather lackluster.  It's true that much of the hype leading up to the iPhone 5's release was pretty much deflated after pretty much every aspect of the phone was leaked, but we haven't seen that "one more thing" moment since Steve Jobs' passing.  Features that most users have been asking for (NFC, wireless charging, etc) weren't included, basically because Apple felt that there wasn't a need; I call laziness on their part.

Apple's "innovation" has always been in question to me personally, but lately they seem to just be playing catch-up to many Android offerings that have been available for the last two years and from the outside looking in, it seems they know consumers will buy whatever they produce next.

Anyway, I'll stop my little rant and turn it over to you.  What do you think of the latest iPhone?  Will you be placing you pre-order this Friday?  Were you expecting more?  Let me know what you think the in comments below.

Joss Whedon to Bring S.H.I.E.L.D. to ABC

After the monster success of The Avengers, it was announced earlier this month that Joss Whedon had signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios, to not only be involved with future Marvel films, but also help create a live action series for Marvel Television.  Well, just hours ago, Deadline has unveiled that ABC has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D, based on "Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate) found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes".

Whedon is set to write, and possibly direct, the pilot episode alongside his bother and sister-in-law, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb attached as executive producers.

While details on who we may see featured on S.H.I.E.L.D. have yet to be revealed, it is more than likely that the television series will tie-in directly to the Marvel cinematic universe that has already been established through Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers...as well as The Avengers 2 set to hit theaters May 1, 2015.

Be on the look out for future updates on the series as more details become available.

What do you think about the news?  Are you more excited for the new Marvel series or Whedon's return to the small screen?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Emma Stone's Blade Runner Inspired Photoshoot

Emma Stone recently did a photoshoot for Interview Magazine, where she helps pay tribute to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner.  The photos, which were taken by fashion photographer Mikael Jansson, accompany an interview with the actress conducted by writer/director Cameron Crowe (who just cast her in his latest project).

In the interview she discusses her summers in Colorado, Taylor Swift, changing her stage name from 'Riley Stone', and experiences from some of her movies.  You can check out the interview here and view more of the photos below after the break.

What do you think of the photoshoot?  Do you think if the Blade Runner sequel becomes a reality, would Emma make a good addition?

Tim Burton Inspired Pokemon Art

I'm a huge Tim Burton fan.  I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but there's just something about his macabre, grotesque style that I just find fascinating...that and he's made some of my favorite movies (i.e., Batman, Beetlejuice, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Big Fish, etc).

Something that I was never a big fan of, was Pokemon.  I never got the appeal of collecting cards, let alone card-based games.  But, had they looked like these, my feelings may have been a bit different.  Artist hatboy has started a series of illustrations, focused on re-imagining classic Pokemon characters using a Burton-esqe twist.

You can check out more of his work after the break and be sure to check out his tumblr for new character designs and a variety of his other work.

Cat "Sings" the Game of Thrones Theme

Ok, so let me first start off by saying that I hate cats.  They are smug little fur balls that always look like they're up to no good.

With that said, I did find the above video pretty funny.  While the cat dosen't really "sing" the theme to Game of Thrones, the editing is pretty solid.

If you could get any animal to "sing" anything theme song, what would they be?  Let me know in the comments below.

Stay nerdy my friends... (and apologies for the lack of updates as of late).

Catherine Boucher's Etsy shop, The Stitchy Button, has a number of really cool custom bean dolls available, including characters from Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and my personal favorite, the Doctor Who bunnies.
These bunnies are pleased to just laze about all day.. in a bowl, in a window, or atop some cozy pillows. Half bean, half bunny, these little critters can't hop out on you for the holiday, so invite one over! The bunnies are about 6" tall, not counting the ears, and are made of prewashed materials. Each sold separately.

Man Creates Life Size WALL-E, Makes You Want to Smile

Computer programmer, Mike Senna, took it upon himself to build a life-size WALL-E, as seen from the Disney-Pixar movie of the same name...and it's awesome.

Back in 2003, the California resident built a replica R2-D2 unit, which he would bring out to visit the City of Hope Pediatric - a children's hospital for cancer survivors .  The reactions he received were so strong, that he set out to build something that has a bit more emotion behind it.  Cue WALL-E.

Senna devoted about 25 hours a week for the last two years outside of his day job, working on completing the replica from scratch.  Using absolutely no blueprints, he relied solely on watching and re-watching the film in extremely close detail...and it shows.

My hat goes off to Senna for taking countless hours of his time, just to be able to brighten a child's day.  You can see a video of his WALL-E after the break and can also find out more Senna's journey by checking out his blog, sennaswalle.blogspot.com.

PS:  I dare you not to smile... :)

Apple Granted Mobile Software Patent That Could Seriously Hinder Device Market

If you've been following the ongoing patent war between Apple and pretty much every OEM out there, well I've only got news for you:  things are going to get even uglier.

Apple was recently awarded ownership of US patent #8223134, which covers "Portable electronic device, method, and graphical user interface for displaying electronic lists and documents" and about 30 other separate claims.  The extremely broad terminology encompasses most UI features on a majority of today's smartphones, including "the displaying of documents on a screen, UI modules for a telephone, video player, camera, and browser, and even scrolling and a multitouch interface feature".  This is pretty much bad new for any company currently producing smartphones, that isn't Apple.

Now I am admittedly an Android fan, favoring Google's OS over Apple's iOS, so I am a little biased when it comes to stuff like this.  But, it seems that Apple isn't doing much innovating these days and instead, is attacking anyone that threatens their crowned jewels - the iPhone and iPad.  The fact that they keep being granted these very broad software patents, is somewhat of a joke, and is just allowing them to stifle   any direct competition.  In Apple's eyes, companies like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Google have "stolen" from them...which is pretty laughable when you think about it given Steve Jobs own comments on "stealing".  While they see it as protecting their intellectual property, many would argue that all Apple really did was copy existing ideas and just make them "prettier".

While I do favor Google's offering, I will give Apple credit where credit is due.  They did single handedly change the face of the cell phone market with the introduction of the first generation iPhone.  I also have a MacBook Pro, which I love dearly.  However, stories like these really make me hate them to a degree that may seem unhealthy.

Ultimately, this is a big fat loss for us consumers, as OEMs may need to start "dumbing" down their own smartphone offerings in order to avoid getting hit with an oncoming storm of lawsuits, thus limiting your choice of smartphone.  While no lawsuits regarding this patent have been filed yet, you know Apple is just waiting to unleash their fury.

What do you think of this "victory" for Apple?  Are you for them "protecting their intellectual property"?  Or are you like me and think the US patent system is ridiculous for granting them this patent?

The Six Super Villians of Nerdery

You know you've either met or ran across people that fall within these six archetypes.  My personal favorite: The Alpha Nerd - you know...the guy that can't wait to berate you for thinking Wolverine's real name is Logan.

Check out the other five after the break.  Let me know in the comments below which type you run into most often.

Bruce Wayne's Golf Cart...Not Very Subtle

I don't consider what I play "golf", but I do enjoy hitting the links.  I would be out there all the time if I had a cart like this.
